Paparoa Village

is nestled in a peaceful valley on a headwater of the mighty Kaipara Harbour, an hour and a half drive North-West of central Auckland. Its history is rich with tribal settlement and warfare in pre-colonial times. In the 19th century, Paparoa became one of the major shipping and boat-building centres of the Kaipara when the region was in its Kauri milling heyday.

Now Paparoa is a popular hub for villagers, farmers and artisans of all types. A charming oasis of historical architecture, country lifestyle and natural beauty, Paparoa is the perfect base for exploring the Kaipara region. Attractions include historic Pahi, the Matakohe Kauri Museum and a variety of walks. Dining and accomodation are both available in the village as are a number of retailers and small service-based businesses.

The population of approximately 270 maintain a strong and vibrant community. Weekly farmers' markets and a variety of local events and community groups provide a fun and friendly atmosphere. Paparoa is a Maori name that means "long, flat rock".
